1st Summer Institute for New Global Health Researchers
Dalhousie University
Halifax, Canada
July 11-15, 2004
The 1st Summer Institute for New Global Health Researchers took place at
Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. Over 80 applications were
received from new global health researchers from around the world, and twenty-one
(half from Canada and half from Low- and Middle-Income countries) attended
this inaugural event.
The Summer Institute was a great mix of social activities and intense work. The ‘work’ programme included plenaries, group discussions and working sessions. Short plenary sessions introduced concepts and models of research to action, the importance of the political, cultural and environmental contexts, ethical and funding considerations and evaluation strategies. Small group discussions, with topics initiated by participants and facilitators, provided time for sharing experiences about overcoming community beliefs and social stigma, building alliances and translating research to policy. Working sessions afforded partners the time to apply the concepts and experiences to their own research to action plans.
Participants and facilitators left the Summer Institute with stronger links with colleagues and mentors; a broader knowledge of global health research and its application to policies, practice and community action; and plans to start turning their research into action.
The Summer Institute would not have been a success without the support of
the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the International
Development Research Centre (IDRC) and our host, International
Centre for Global Health at Dalhousie University; or without the enthusiasm, passion and vision of
the planning committee, facilitators and most importantly, the participants.
